First built in 1852, the single story Creole cottage known as Epps House once sat on Bayou Boeuf near Holmesville, Avoyelles Parish. After being moved a time or two, it now sits on LSUA's campus as of 1999. Named for the Edwin Epp's family, Epps House actually tells Solomon Northup's story of slavery and freedom. Northup's book, Twelve Years a Slave, as well as exhibits and folk art are a few things Epps House offers anyone wanting to get a peek into Northup's life. Built around the late 1700s/early 1800s, the French Creole Plantation house known as Kent Plantation House, or simply "Kent House," is the oldest standing structure in Central Louisiana. Because of its age and original land plat it's still standing on, Kent House easily depicts the French, Spanish, and American cultures that greatly influenced Louisiana. With a little under 20,000 square feet, the Slayter House is a gorgeous, plantation styled estate property modeled after the famous "Oak Alley." Slayter House, also called "Maison Bonne Vive," is located on the corner of Horseshoe Drive and Prescott Road and is a stunning location to host big events such as weddings, receptions, or fancy balls. If no events are scheduled, call in and get the grand tour of the breath-taking elegance that is the Slayter House.

Ranging from colonial archives and French and Spanish records for the Louisiana territory to thousands of historic photographs from around Alexandria and the acclaimed Newcomb Collection (close to 700 unique photos from the 1860s to the 1960s), the Louisiana History Museum holds one of the most exquisite collections of historical artifacts in the state!
