Well first off, West Monroe is located on Interstate 20 across the Ouachita River from Monroe. The city has grown into a wonderful community over the years. We have some interesting history to share.Around 1780, settlers began to locate on the bank of the Ouachita River. In 1815, a ferry was was built that linked Fort Miro (Monroe) to the west bank opening up trade. By 1860 the two communities took up on the west bank, one being called Cotton Port and the other being called Trenton. As the cotton industry grew, Cotton Port became the most important cotton shipping center in Northeast Louisiana. When the town applied for full town status, they discovered that there was already a registered town with the name of Cotton Port. In 1883, the town was renamed West Monroe and would later include the community of Trenton. Today our town is home to many industries, manufacturers and amazing retail growth. I hope you enjoyed the history lesson. I know that I like knowing about where I'm from!
