    Hansen's Sno-Bliz Shop is a true New Orleans institution has been around since 1939. The founder, Ernest Hansen, invented the first ice-shaving machine, which makes the ice perfectly fluffy. Adding his wife, Mary's, homemade syrups makes these snowballs the perfect summer treat for a hot New Orleans summer day. Be prepared to wait in line for an hour or more, but it's worth it! Located at the corner of Tchoupitoulas and Bordeaux.

    Cherry Espresso Bar is a hidden coffee shop submerged in the beautiful uptown area. This place is great for studying or working in a quiet, yet vibrant environment. It's perfect for a quick stop when you're driving between Uptown and the Central Business District. The baristas are friendly and brew great coffee, too! They offer a great variety of pastries, toasts, and salads.

    Breads on Oak is a low-key vegan-organic restaurant/cafe that offers a variety of yummy treats. They taste so good that you can't even tell it's vegan. I particularly visit them for the coffee, and I love that they have most milk substitutes. My kids, on the other hand, love their chocolate cookies. They also have gluten-free options as well as inside and outside seating.

    There's nothing quite like a casual stroll around the beautiful streets of Uptown. I love walking over the vibrant colored petals that fall from the beautiful Japanese Magnolia trees. They seem to transform the concrete sidewalks into an enchanting painting. It always seems to put me in a relaxed mood.

    Enjoy biking, walking, jogging or skateboarding along this 1.8 mile path through beautiful Audubon Park, with its canopy of mossy live oaks. The park sits on land purchased by New Orleans over 145 years ago and named after naturalist John James Audubon. The World Cotton Centennial was held here in 1884. One of my favorite things to do is watch the thousands of migratory birds that descend on Bird Island in one of the park lagoons.

    The Columns Hotel is located on St. Charles Avenue and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1883 for Simon Hernsheim, owner of Hernsheim Brothers & Company. This company was the largest manufacturer of cigars at the time. Locals as well as visitors are often spotted sitting on the large front gallery as they chat and enjoy a drink. A good place to be seen!

  • On the corner of St. Charles Avenue and State Street sits a stately mansion, worthy of all the pomp and circumstance associated with Uptown New Orleans. But, you must remember, New Orleans, with all of her history, elegance and, yes, excesses, is also a city with a grand sense of humor in which its denizens know well how to celebrate "The Season." And when, exactly, is that season? I would say it begins with Halloween and lasts through Dirty Linen night at the end of summer...so it's effectively the entire year.

    However, Halloween, the season's opener, is worthy of further explanation as its origin is inextricably woven into the Catholic fabric of New Orleans. We all know October 31 is Halloween, but the date also marks the evening before All Saints Day. November 1 is the day on which Catholics and many Anglicans honor all their saints or hallows, hence the name All Hallows' Eve. In the carnival celebrations of All Hallows' Eve, our ancestors utilized humor and ridicule to fully face death.

    So, New Orleanians, with their love for the saints and their propensity for satire, have finely honed this ridiculing weapon into a grand citywide carnival manifest in the parties and decorations that line the finest avenues and most humble residences alike. There is no distinction. All are included in this grand celebration.

    Observe the photos of the mansion at St. Charles and State Street. Marvel at the history and tradition. Join us as we begin the next "Season" that is exclusively New Orleans.

    Fresh Market opened on St. Charles Avenue approximately two years back. The company is celebrating their 30th year anniversary this year. I like the fact that this company is active in the community and supports local fisherman, producers and growers. Visit them at 3338 St. Charles Avenue.
