After building his famous Fontainebleau Plantation, Bernard de Marigny de Mandeville acquired adjoining land along Lake Pontchartrain's shore. In 1834 the property was subdivided to become the town called Mandeville. It was an immediate success, with a casino and hotel. Creole families summered on the lakefront. Visitors were transported by steamboat from New Orleans. Town plans noted that space between the lake and the streets fronting the lake would never be obstructed in any manner. Such incredible foresight preserved the shoreline's natural beauty for the delight of future generations.
