Right off of Hwy 22 in Madisonville, as you cross over the bridge, is a little Mexican restaurant. It doesn't look too flashy, but it is quite delicious. They offer many of the items you would look for in a typical Mexican restaurant. It's a casual place with limited indoor and outdoor seating.

For the residents in the area, Crabby Shack is not just seafood. It is daily specials and now Crabby Shack's Smokehouse. The pulled pork and slow-smoked brisket are just two choices from the Smokehouse menu. Try the Kobe Beef Sausage or the Smoked Chicken. Actually, you can't go wrong with any. Don't forget about the boiled crayfish when the season starts.

View the river from the grounds of the Abita Roasting Co. while sipping your coffee and eating one of the many choices from their breakfast and lunch menu. Not many restaurants have this view in the morning. Plenty of tables on the grounds, the front porch or inside.

Located just off the Tchefuncte River, Morton's Seafood 34-year history says a lot about the owners and the residents who frequent the restaurant. At Morton's, guests get an eyeful from the décor. The walls are decorated with some of their favorite customer's award-winning catches but people come here for the food. From their fresh boiled seafood to seafood boat, you can't go wrong at Morton's.

What a great way to spend a beautiful fall day on the river in Madisonville. People are strolling and enjoying the fall weather and water activity. This never gets old. Numerous benches for your enjoyment or just sit in your car, but that isn't recommended on a day like this.

The beautiful Tchefuncte River in Madisonville is home to the annual Wooden Boat Festival. This premier family event offers local cuisine, live music, arts & crafts, children's activities, a boat parade and boat contest. This amazing event is presented by Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum.

What a beautiful campground on the river! Clean facilities, bathhouse, and beautiful landscape. The sites are decent sizes and the grounds were very quiet at night. Only 45 minutes to New Orleans and only 30 minutes to Cajun Encounters.

You can spend the night in the RV, just stop in for a visit anytime of the day, or choose to stay just for the weekend. Spend your time biking, fishing, kayaking, or laughing with the children on the playground. A trip to Fairview-Riverside State Park offers endless opportunities for great photos and wonderful memories while exploring over 90 acres set along the banks of the Tchefuncte River located at 119 Fairview Drive in Madisonville.

During the Spanish regime, Choctaw Indian country around the Tchefuncte River was referred to as the District of Chifoncta. By 1785, Charles Parent settled north of Madisonville. Juan Baham's 1798 Spanish land grant included the site of Chifoncta and the village was called Coquille. In 1810, President James Madison claimed the region for Louisiana. In 1813, the town consisted of a few French-built mud-walled huts, log cabins and some small fields. The town dedicated as Madisonville was formally incorporated in 1817. The river village continues to hug history to life.

You won't believe the variety of home styles available in the town originally referred to as Chifoncte during the Spanish Colonial Period (1779-1803.) Renamed Madisonville, when incorporated in 1817, the little town on the Tchefuncte River has retained its original charm over the past couple hundred years. Remarkably, it still has a "village feel." You can live in a grand mansion or a comfy cottage, or maybe one of the executive style homes in Madisonville's numerous splendid subdivisions. The choice is yours!

Situated on the Westbank of the Tchefuncte River just north of the Madisonville draw bridge sits Friends Coastal Restaurant. Friends was a quaint and much beloved pit stop for the many that enjoy spending time on the water in Madisonville and the surrounding waterways. Many would pull up and tie off the boat and stop in for a snack, a drink and the latest gossip from the river.

In 2012 Friends suffered a catastrophic storm surge from Hurricane Issac. Fast forward to August of 2013 just as plans were about to be enacted to rebuild Friends the structured suffered a fire that destroyed the remaining structure.

Many who had loved and laughed over a cool drink at Friends worried that their favorite watering hole had been lost forever. Well, here we are in the spring of 2015 and those worries have dissipated like the thunder clouds on a muggy Louisiana afternoon. Friends Coastal Restaurant has returned. Only now the long lost friend that has returned is that of a matured more focused version of its old self. The new friends now will boast over 25000 sq. feet and can accommodate up to 300 guests. A more refined menus and drink list will accompany the open dining area that will double as an event venue. Plans are in the works for a docking area and river level deck and bar so you can pull your boat right up and grab a bite. Patrons will be able to tie one on while you tie off.

Welcome Home, Old Friend!

Madisonville is a lovely, picturesque community located on and around the Tchefuncte River. During carnival season, it plays host to The Krewe of Tchefuncte, a special parade comprised of an all boat lineup on the riverfront. It makes for a fun and unique carnival experience that the entire family can enjoy. It's one of the many happenings around town that make Madisonville such a special place to live.

Every year Madisonville is home to one of the most culturally unique traditions in Louisiana. Old St. Nick comes to Madisonville via boat on the Tchefuncte River and presents Christmas goodies to the children at Town Hall. It is an event not to be missed by children of all ages.

This museum is located on the Tchefuncte River and hosts the Annual Wooden Boat Festival every October. Wooden boats from around the world have been showcased at this festival. This year, the museum will be celebrating the 25th Annual Wooden Boat Festival! The dates for this year are October 11 and 12, in Madisonville.

I found a great hidden gem In Madisonville to watch the sunset on The Tchefuncte River. At the marina, you can sit on the deck of Hooked Up Bar & Grill and sip cocktails as the sun sets over the water. This is one of my favorite evening getaways in Madisonville.

I don't eat a lot of red meat and, as a result, I am very picky when I do. But, I always make an exception when I dine at this restaurant! The steaks and prime rib at Keith Young's Steakhouse are top quality and delicious. And don't think that they only serve beef! They have wonderful seafood dishes as well. Keith and Lynda Young are wonderful people, and their restaurant reflects that.

In addition, the facility offers two separate rooms for hosting special occasions! Not too long ago, my husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary in the larger party room. My birthday group of nine "girlfriends" often reserve the wine room for lunch! Keith Young's is absolutely my favorite restaurant on the North Shore!

Just along the banks of The Tchefuncte River is a little coffee shop called The Abita Roasting Company. They roast their beans in house and have the most spectacular views of the river you will ever find. I try and spend every Sunday morning sitting on the porch watching the boats pass. It is about as much southern charm any one person can stand! That is what is so inviting about Madisonville.
