The Louisiana Renaissance Festival in Hammond is a vibrant, immersive journey into the past, where the enchantment of the Renaissance comes to life in a kaleidoscope of sights, sounds, and smells. Set in a lush, wooded area, the festival feels like stepping through a time portal into a bustling 16th-century village. The air hums with the lively tunes of minstrels and the clanging of swords from live jousting tournaments, while the scents of roasting turkey legs and spiced cider waft through the crowd. Colorful banners flutter overhead, and performers in elaborate, period-accurate costumes roam the grounds, engaging with festival-goers in character as knights, jesters, pirates, and queens. Artisan booths are sprinkled throughout the village, offering handmade jewelry, blown glass, leather goods, and ornate weapons. Each stand a treasure trove for the curious.

The atmosphere is electric, filled with laughter and the thrill of discovery. People of all ages join in on the fun, donning costumes themselves - pirates, fair maidens, and even fantastical creatures like elves and dragons. The festival offers something for everyone, from fire breathers and acrobats to sword-swallowers and musicians performing with lutes and bagpipes. At the heart of it all is a sense of community, as guests and performers alike revel in the magic of the Renaissance, sharing in the celebration of history, art, and adventure under Louisiana’s blue autumn skies. It's a spectacle of old-world charm infused with the lively spirit of modern-day Hammond.

This past weekend, I celebrated my birthday at one of my favorite restaurants in Hammond, Tope La. They did not disappoint! I started with my favorite appetizer, the Asian Duck, followed by the delectable Chicken Maurepas with pecan rice. The meal was simply outstanding. Everyone in my party thoroughly enjoyed their dishes. If you're in Hammond and seeking a great meal at a good price, and with wonderful, friendly service, give Tope La a try.

This area is commonly called Cate addition. The Hammond Historic District has labeled this as Hyer-Cate. It is named after the secondary founder of the city, C.E. Cate, and the Hyer Survey, which dictated Hammond's layout primarily based on the location of the railroad tracks.
Original homes were circa 1890 - 1970 and included New Formalism, Craftsman, and Queen Anne Style architecture.

Boundaries are considered to be W. Dakota St on the north (including W. Idaho St. and Greenlawn Dr), then W. Thomas St on the south. On the West, N. General Patton St. to Laurel St thru SW Railroad Ave. The two blocks east and west of Cate Park and the three blocks to the south are considered part of the "downtown district." This is one of the coveted areas of Hammond, and homes often sell before they are even listed for sale.

I've been living a block off of Southeastern's campus for quite some time and figuring I'd share my experiences. My dogs and I walk throughout the day and are constantly greeted with a great attitude. The people are so nice and respectful around these parts. At night time, you'll notice that most of the area is lit up properly. We don't have any issues but my dogs are two giant German Shepherds though, haha. We've really been taking advantage of the proximity to downtown and local food places. It truly is a task to try everything but I will say breakfast around town has been A+.

This experience absolutely deserved a review. After a long day of work, I walked in and was greeted by friendly staff led by Ms. Candy and Ms. Chloe. The staff is a firm believer in Southern hospitality and their food was even more delightful. For as long as I'm around the southeastern campus, I'll be stopping by for the best BBQ in town.
