The Plaquemine's Parish Sheriff's Office proudly spearheads a vital role in fostering positive relationships throughout our entire parish by engaging citizens of all ages. One of the many community programs coordinated is the Citizen's Police Academy. In 2005, Lt. Allen Sanchez had a vision and executed a plan to connect the Sheriff's Office with local residents. Through Lt. Sanchez's hard work and networking throughout the parish, the Citizen's Police Academy was born. Residents anxiously signed up for a 10 week course with the Sheriff's Office promising an engaging, up close and personal overview of the day to day policy, procedures and challenges our men and women in blue confront. The Sheriff's Office delivered on this promise and did not disappoint.Graduation for the first class was scheduled for August 29, 2005. Eventfully, Hurricane Katrina ravaged the lower end of the parish and delayed the graduation. As the community and the Sheriff's Office worked tirelessly to clean and rebuild, it was evident unity and pride in the parish was the motivating force moving us forward. Since graduating the first class, Lt. Sanchez sadly passed away in 2012. His legacy lives on at every Citizen's Police Academy class. This year, the Sheriff's Office will graduate class #18. Classes alternate between Belle Chasse and Buras. A wide array of class topics include use of force, narcotics and gun safety. A tour of the jail and a 4 hour ride along with an officer (in a marked police car) adds to the exciting curriculum. For more information or to sign up for the next class, contact 504-934-6900.
