    Algiers Point and the Algiers 'hinterland' are getting better connected for bikes. In January 2021, the levee from Federal City going downstream became paved and is now a wonderful connection between the ferries of Algiers Point-French Quarter and the Lower Algiers-Chalmette ferry. But it didn't stop there. Many larger roads now have separated bike lanes. The bike network in Algiers has received national recognition!

    Algiers Point is one of New Orleans' best kept secrets and the second oldest neighborhood. It is directly across the Mississippi River from the French Quarter. Algiers was granted to Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, founder of New Orleans, in 1719. It was used as the City's slaughterhouse initially and to house the City's powder magazine. Many African slaves were kept in barracks here before being transported across the river to the City to be sold.

    In 1827, the Algiers/Canal Street Ferry began operating and has been in service ever since. It was a major contributor to the area's growth. Today, the ferry offers an alternate and quick 15-minute commute to the City.

    Although some of the houses and structures in Algiers Point predate the Civil War, most were built after a catastrophic fire in 1895 that destroyed 10 square blocks of homes and businesses, including the Duverje Plantation House that was being used as the Courthouse. A new Courthouse was built in 1896 and is still in use today.

    Algiers Point is a sought after neighborhood with a small town feel. Many residents enjoy walking on the levee and affectionately call the area the "Point". There are many small restaurants, corner grocery stores, coffee shops, bars and small businesses, among the many creole cottages and double shotgun homes.

    The first Saturday in December the Algiers Bonfire draws huge crowds to the Riverfront to kick off the holidays and is not to be missed! It is also a great spot to watch the New Year's Eve Fireworks on the river!
