Bywater Area Insight

  • One day I was walking down North Rampart Street in the French Quarter, and I saw a large sign hanging above a defunct gas station on Esplanade and North Rampart that read Music Box Village. What is that, I wondered? A few days later a friend's daughter who recently graduated from Tulane and decided to stay in New Orleans rather than go back to NYC mentioned that she would be selling some of her handmade art at the Music Box Village on Sunday.

It was a pretty day, so we decided to ride our bikes there. We headed down North Rampart Street which turns into St. Claude Avenue, passed through the Marigny neighborhood and then the Bywater. When we got to Poland Street, the last street before the industrial Canal and where North Rampart Street ends at the levee, we had arrived! Music Box Village is located at 4557 North Rampart Street, New Orleans. We entered the Village and were instantly mesmerized by sounds emitting from life-size interactive musical sculptures! Several hours later we were in a state of giddiness! When was the last time you spent the day climbing up stairs that play music?! Find your inner child and go wild!

One of New Orleans' oldest neighborhoods downriver, and within walking distance from the French Quarter, the Bywater has emerged as a vibrant neighborhood with a funky feel. It is a mix of old-time New Orleans and hip bohemianism. It has a heavy arts influence, with many galleries and small theaters. It is also home to many eclectic restaurants, cafes, stores and homes. Some of its colorful architecture includes Creole cottages, shotguns, Victorian doubles, American townhomes and Italianate mansions.

There are many theories about how the area got its name, the more obvious being, that it is sandwiched between the Mississippi River on the south, and the Industrial Canal on the east. Developed prior to 1852, some of the streets still have names derived from original land owners, such as, deLesseps, Montegut and deClouet.

Although the Bywater has experienced urban renewal and commercial development since Hurricane Katrina, and a noticeable rise in property values, it still maintains a commitment to preservation and history.
