  • The dilapidated almost century old building, located in West Monroe on the Ouachita River at the foot of the Endom Bridge, will reopen soon as Trapp's. Built in the 1920's, the building operated for decades as a fish market. In the second half of the 20th century it was converted into a restaurant, the popular Bayles Landing. The business closed and the building sat vacant for several years until it was purchased and, after a 15 month renovation, will reopen on March 16.

The pilings have been girded and the building has undergone a miracle makeover while preserving the original structure as much as possible. Trapp's will have a Louisiana vibe with a menu of seafood, po'boys, crawfish, jambalaya and other Cajun delicacies, as well as steaks. The overgrown riverbank of brush and trash have been cleared, allowing boaters to tie up their vessels and eat at the new open air patio. To add to the festive atmosphere of the patio, a bandstand has been added. Customers will be able to sit down and eat while enjoying a view of the beautiful Ouachita River, as well as the Monroe skyline with its historic buildings.
  • Traveling west on Cypress Street in West Monroe, one can't help but notice the new businesses being built there. There are several new buildings under construction, with five new ones already completed, up and running. A large flooring company, two Neighborhood Wal-Mart's, a bank and a Dairy Queen are among some of the most recent businesses that most recently moved into their new locations.

There is a very large convenience store complex under construction on the corner of Cypress Street and Wallace Dean, directly across from the Well Road intersection. This is the former location of Claiborne Elementary School. It will be divided up and have other small business in the complex. There is a Family Dollar near completion as well as a Newk's just off Cypress across from Thomas Road intersection. And next to Parker's Auto Body Shop there are obvious signs of a large pad about be poured.

Don't forget to get some good home cooking at Willie's Diner just half a mile from the store. Oh we love our Robertson family and the Robertson family loves West Monroe!

  • If you can't find something to do in a 160 acre park then something's wrong. Kiroli Park is home to forested areas, large play area for children, and a Raising Canes Dog Park which is separated into two sections. One for large dogs and the other for small ones. How cool is that?!

Enjoy jogging and nature trails, a fishing pond, beautiful gardens, covered picnic areas, and a theatre stage for performances. Kiroli Park also hosts Ballet under the Stars in the Spring. Climate-controlled lodges make it perfect for family reunions and receptions.

Well first off, West Monroe is located on Interstate 20 across the Ouachita River from Monroe. The city has grown into a wonderful community over the years. We have some interesting history to share.

Around 1780, settlers began to locate on the bank of the Ouachita River. In 1815, a ferry was was built that linked Fort Miro (Monroe) to the west bank opening up trade. By 1860 the two communities took up on the west bank, one being called Cotton Port and the other being called Trenton. As the cotton industry grew, Cotton Port became the most important cotton shipping center in Northeast Louisiana. When the town applied for full town status, they discovered that there was already a registered town with the name of Cotton Port. In 1883, the town was renamed West Monroe and would later include the community of Trenton.

Today our town is home to many industries, manufacturers and amazing retail growth. I hope you enjoyed the history lesson. I know that I like knowing about where I'm from!

Maybe I'm just a country girl with some city in me, but I love going to the Honey Hole! It's locally owned and was established in 1991. Now it may not be the most captivating store front but it certainly has character. All they do is fishing and no other sporting goods because fishing is more than just a hobby. It's a big business and these people know their business!

They specialize in crappie tackle and keep up with what's in our area waterways in order to have the correct bait available. I love shopping the clothing side for great men's and women's apparel. They have some really cool lines of clothing and other products. So, if you're ever on this side of town near the golf course, check 'em out. You won't be sorry!
  • If you are looking for a great place to eat seafood with the kids, then you must try Scott's Catfish & Seafood. Seating is limited but it's worth the wait. My mother-in-law was a very picky eater when it came to catfish. She had to have it fried just so or she wouldn't eat it. There were many a restaurants we ate at, she ordered catfish and always sent it back until we found Scott's! She ate there every Friday night.

Now, I have discovered that I'm pretty fond of the etouffee. Portions are large and the service is great. You are greeted with a hello and a smile, which is something I like. Nothing like Southern hospitality, especially these days. Scott's is located in the heart of the city so it's easy to find if you are new to the city. Who knows, maybe I'll see ya there!

West Monroe is home of the Duck Commander folks! Duck Commander, Buck Commander, Willie's Watering Hole and Willie's Duck Diner as well as Duck & Dressing, a boutique owned by the Duck Dynasty clan. We love them here and so do the tourists!

The Duck Commander Headquarters is located at the corner of Thomas Road and Kings' Lane. Thomas Road is a main drag in town. You can access I-20 from it, go to WalMart, Flair's Jewelers, Office Depot, Hobby Lobby, Tinseltown Movie Theater, Hibachi Grill, numerous fast food restaurants, access to restaurant row and other shops.

Across the street from the Headquarters is a new addition, Willie's Watering Hole. Go for a soda or a glass of unsweetened tea! Then travel to Willie's Duck Diner next to Academy Sports and experience some of Ms. Kay's southern home-cooked recipes. Don't forget to pick out a unique outfit from Duck & Dressing, designed by one of the girls which is located on DeSiard in Monroe!
